What’s the process for becoming an egg donor?

There are a few steps involved prior to donating, including counselling, medical screening, and an egg collection procedure. At TasIVF, we have a dedicated and experienced donor team who provide guidance and support throughout the entire process. 

You are important to us. And we want you to feel informed, empowered and supported throughout every stage. Here's how it works, step by step.

    1. Getting started

    Speak to our donor team, who will explain the entire process and answer any initial questions. You’ll then meet with one of our dedicated Fertility Specialists, who will ask about your medical history, including both your physical and mental health.

  • Donor counselling

    2. Counselling

    You will have two sessions with an experienced TasIVF counsellor to discuss the legal, social, genetic and psychological aspects of being involved with the donor program. You’ll complete a profile about yourself, provide a family medical history, and sign consent forms for donation. Any further required medical checks will also be arranged.

    If you have a current partner, they’ll need to attend these sessions to ensure you are both comfortable and clear about what the process involves.

    3. Egg Collection

    Being an egg donor involves going through the first two steps of an IVF cycle to have the eggs collected. This involves medication to boost the number of eggs produced naturally. Vaginal ultrasounds and blood tests will be used to monitor the growing number of eggs. Once there are enough eggs, your fertility specialist will organise an egg collection procedure, usually performed under light sedation or general anaesthetic at one of our day hospitals.

    4. Donation

    Once the eggs are collected, they will be vitrified, or frozen, for a family in need. There’s nothing else you need to do from here – other than accept our gratitude for your incredibly generous gift.

    5. What happens once a child is born?

    Once a baby is born from your donation, TasIVF maintains a secure register of all past donors, which the offspring of donors have the option to access when they turn 18.
